Woodland Hills Retrievers and Ranch is located on the foothills of the beautiful Wasatch Mountain Range on the outskirts of the small but growing city of Salem.  Salem is about 15 miles south of Provo, and about an hour south of Salt Lake City, Utah. We feel very fortunate to awake each morning to an awesome panoramic view of the outdoors.

 

In 1991, my wife and I were "City Slickers" with Masters Degrees from Brigham Young University-Provo when we moved with our kids from the City of Orem, to Salem, a quiet peaceful town.  This move brought excitement into our lives, and welcomed us into the world of breeding superior performance and genetically sound dogs and horses.  Being the perfectionists that we are, we very quickly learned that quality begets quality.  In other words, the quality of pups and colts that people search for, come from quality and proven parents, the reason why we offer you pups and colts from highly successful parents and grandparents.

In our first 10 years, we found ourselves heavily involved in the AKC Retriever Hunt Tests and our lab retrievers were offsprings of the best field dogs in the country; National Field and National Amateur Field Champs.  Our labs, like their parents, were athletes, lean and long muscled, stylish, and boy were they fast.  They could turn on a dime and swim speedily like alligators after their prey. They had big explosive water entries, and were so exciting to watch.  We were so proud that our females easily met the strict requirements when breeding to outside stud dogs who were usually National Field Champions.  We were even more pleased that our pups were highly sought after by people all over the country and in Canada.  And why not, they were just like their parents; athletes, easily trainable, health certified, and born to compete. 

In our second decade, and not as involved in the AKC Hunt Tests, we find ourselves with a different kind of Labrador Retriever, a "Dual Purpose Lab" that have the "Classic English" Lab look.  Unlike the "Field Labrador" the "Dual Lab" still has the great desire to retrieve, but we feel that they are calmer and have the more blocky big-boned look!  This is the lab that everyone pictures in their mind that are known to be the great family companion.  They love to interact with people, or they are just satisfied to lounge.  Our labs also have the genes inherited from their parents and grandparents to become that amazing game flusher and waterfowl retriever that the occassional to avid hunter dreams of having.

By the mid of 2008, Woodland Hills Retrievers will have completed its change from Field Labs to the Well Rounded Dual Purpose Lab.  Our Dual Labs still come from the best labs in the country.  Most of their sires belong to an elite group of Show Champions that have also earned their AKC Master Hunter Title.  To this date, there have been only 40+ Show Champions in the US that have earned the Master Hunter Titles (CH/MH).  We at Woodland Hills Retrievers believe that these CH/MH are the Best of the Best.  Like other retrievers that have earned the Master Hunter Title, they can do multiple retrieves and blinds.  They understand and carry out voice, hand, and whistle commands.  They can also sit at the side of thier hunter and honor, allowing other dogs to retrieve their birds without interfering. These CH/MH are gorgeous, judged to have the best physical conformation which typifies the "Classic" Labrador Retriever look.  They have a blocky head, a muscular compact body, and a thick otter like tail, and a rich thick double layered coat.   Again, the traits that we've grown to like best in the All Purpose Dual Lab, is that they are extremely " Calm, Intelligent, Gorgeous, and Pleasant to be with.
